English

One unit of English is required at each grade level. The English curriculum features two levels within each grade with instructional materials and objectives in the respective levels directed toward the different interests and abilities of the students. The courses are designated as English II (10th grade), English III (11th grade), and English IV (12th grade). English II, III, and IV are based on the Arkansas standards for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English Language Arts as set forth in the Arkansas English Language Arts Standards for Arkansas Public Schools.

The department also offers Composition I and II which may earn the student concurrent college credit at Arkansas Tech University. This course is only offered at the 12th-grade level.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Although a foreign language credit is not required for graduation from RHS, it is strongly encouraged especially for students planning to attend a four-year college or university. Foreign language classes also help meet the course requirements for many of the career clusters. Students learn the fundamentals of the language in French I and Spanish I courses. In the French II and Spanish II, III and IV courses, the students will build on skills developed in French I and Spanish I while continuing to work to communicate effectively in the respective language. French is offered at RHS through online courses through Virtual Arkansas, while Spanish is offered through direct instruction at RHS.

JOURNALISM

If students are interested in writing, photography, design, and publishing, these courses are for them. These courses also are helpful in career paths of law, political science, publishing, broadcasting, graphic design, and others. After taking Fundamentals of Journalism, students should apply to be on newspaper or yearbook staffs to complete the intermediate, advanced, and elective classes. Advanced and elective classes are honors courses. Students may also add lab to their schedule to be able to explore careers and career paths independently.
